It was as I was getting a foot reflexology treatment, that it occurred to me that my massage therapist wasn’t using the usual massage oil. It felt different somehow. Heavier. Slipperier. Was it baby oil (aka mineral oil), instead of almond?

Exactly what part of a baby needs oiling anyway? Is it liquid lubricant on pivot points and pulleys (to keep shifting smooth) and grease on the headset, hub and bottom bracket bearings? Or am I thinking of bikes? Which reminds me that my bike is due for a tune up, the brakes squeal horrifically.

What type of massage oil do you prefer? Sweet almond, fractionated coconut, grapeseed and jojoba are all popular options chosen for their ability to provide good glide, nourish the skin, and absorb without excessive grease. Alternatively, there is avocado oil for very dry skin or sesame oil, a thicker, warming oil used in Ayurvedic, deep tissue and sports massage.

What type of cooking oil do you typically use? Popular cooking oils include: avocado, sesame, grapeseed, canola, vegetable, peanut, extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil.

If you had to choose only one of the above oils for both cooking and massage, which oil would you pick? And do you want the massage first or the meal?
