Knowing your weakness is a strength. As soon as you recognize and acknowledge your weakness, you can work around it. You can even work with it.
If we feel very ashamed of our weakness, we become avoidant and don’t see it clearly. We’re blind to the behaviour patterns we are stuck in. We can’t see the potential positive aspects either. You may wonder what I mean by that. Quite simply that every weakness has a silver lining.
Say for example that our weakness is sensitivity and self doubt. No fun for sure. This vulnerability is something we want to be able to observe calmly as it happens. In that moment, we can take a few deep breaths and reflect on the many times we have successfully faced our fears. We can lean into our discomfort and trust that we can do it this time too and that we might learn something intriguing along the way.
What is the silver lining?
From my own experience, the silver lining of sensitivity and self doubt is curiosity and empathy. Because I have struggled, felt overwhelmed and disconnected, I can recognize others in this state. I can connect with them. I can offer my attention, my presence, and my humour. I gain a sense of purpose, a deepening of confidence and learn from every person I connect with. [Even if what I learn is sometimes simply how not to do things. Lol.]
Some examples of personality traits that might seem like a weakness but have unseen benefits include:
- Shy and Introverted = Thoughtful and Reflective
- Sensitive = Empathetic/Compassionate
- Overly critical = Attention to detail
- Disorganized = Creative
- Impulsive = Spontaneous
- Irresponsible = Adventurous
- Stubbornness = Perseverance
- Worried = Prepared and Responsible
Of course, these are just possible positive aspects. So much depends on you and how you approach yourself. But developing self-awareness and understanding the potential benefits of these challenging traits can be a powerful tool for personal growth.
So, really accepting and working with your perceived weakness is a three-step process:
- Observe what’s happening and get curious;
- Get creative about how to work with and around your weakness; and
- Find and actively lean into your silver lining.
