From Wyrd to Weird

I haven’t always loved the word “weird”, with its negative connotations of misfit or strange. But when I looked at its etymology, it comes from the Old English word wyrd, an adjective that originally meant ‘having the power to control destiny’. Later it came to refer to things that seemed to happen by magic or that were strange, unusual, or mysterious. I’ll take that.
